Feyenoord – AZ Alkmaar
February 7, 14h30 CET
Feyenoord did some excellent business this week to secure their fourth place even more. As Heracles
and Utrecht were both defeated and NAC and AZ had a draw they were the big winner this midweek,
as they’re now nine points ahead on the number five of the table. For that reason they can
concentrate on the third position now, which is closer by: they’re just four points behind on Ajax, who
play Twente this weekend. For that reason Feyenoord definitely needs to get all three points against
AZ, but I wouldn’t be too convinced about the homewin. Against RKC coach Been made the wise
choice to play with Makaay as striker (Feyenoord really lacked a target man upfront last couple of
weeks), but they never convinced. They won 0-1 in the end and didn’t get in serious trouble over 90
minutes of football, but they didn’t dominate the game either and actually never made the impression
to be in full control. Feyenoord has troubles against weaker sides it seems, and for that reason we
may expect them to do better against AZ this weekend – like they did last couple of weeks against
both PSV and Ajax.
It’s getting a little problematic for AZ. During their midweek game at NAC they once more showed
some good potential and dominated most of the game, but scoring goals turned out once again to be
a serious problem. AZ is playing pretty good games every week again, but Lady Luck is definitely not
with them. They manage to waste the most beautiful chances, while their opponents score late on or
from the only chances they get. AZ is getting on steam with Advocaat in charge, but they really need
to start catching points. Here at Feyenoord Advocaat won’t be available as he’s in Poland for the draw
as coach of Belgium. Note that AZ was defeated earlier this season at the same fixture for the cup.
If you ask me there are too many uncertain factors here to place a bet on this game. For example:
will Feyenoord improve from their midweek action and reach their level from their games with PSV
and Ajax again? Or: will Lady Luck finally be on AZ’s hand again, and will they finally start scoring
goals from all the chances they create? I can’t answer these questions and I don’t have the guts to
take AZ level ball at 2.20 (which is a tasty price) either, but if I had to play my last dollar on this game
that would be my pick.
