| The Dutch season starts traditionally with the Super Cup, played in Rotterdam. AZ’s squad didn’t change much. The reigning champions so far didn’t lose any keyplayers, although Ajax is currently trying to sign midfield-engine De Zeeuw. With Wernbloom (Göteborg) and Nielsen (Chelsea) AZ signed two new players, but I don’t think they’ll be regulars early on. The biggest transformation however was made at the sideline. Coach Van Gaal left for Bayern München, and AZ signed Ronald Koeman as his replacement. This will definitely hurt the team. The championship last year was won mainly because of the tactical mastermind Van Gaal, and Koeman has definitely not that level. During pre-season AZ played so-so, the two serious games against Club Brugge and HSV were both lost 0-1 and in neither of these games AZ made a very strong impression. Automatisms weren’t there yet. Heerenveen coach Sollied put his side during the midweek already in the underdog-role, by stating his side isn’t ready yet for this match. We can put some question marks at that statement, as he did the same last year in front of the cup final. Heerenveen had quite some mutations this summer, and with playmaker Pranjic (Bayern München) they definitely lost their best player, but Heerenveen has one of the better scouting departments and especially with the signings of Papadopulos and Djuric Heerenveen bought some quality again as well. Their preseason was not very convincing though: their were wins against Gent and Sivasspor, draws against Mechelen and Trabzonspor, but also defeats against Sint Truiden and Olympiakos. I would be very careful for this opener. AZ is skyhigh favourite, but the HSV-match proved Koeman has plenty of work to do to reach last season’s level again. Add to that the fact De Zeeuw is doubtful because of an knee injury, the absence of defende Klavan, the absence of striker Pellè and the possible absence of striker Dembele, and you can imagine there’s no value on this season’s AZ for this game. I would say +0,5 with odds around 1.90 are good enough to take on this one with small stakes, as that’s definitely too high under the current circumstances. Be careful with under/over, as AZ has some missings up front and plays less attractive than last season. Heerenveen has Roorda, Smarason, Vayrynen and Dingsdag out. Bak Nielsen is doubtful, but ready to play. |
