Rapid Vienna vs. Red Bulls - Preview

Author picks 1 units.

Match start at 19:30 hour.

TIP: 2 - AUTHOR IS NOT WINNER
Three days after the first round of the Austrian first league, named tipp3 Bundesliga powered by T-Mobile this year, there will be the second round with the big match to be played at Gerhard Hanappi Stadion in Vienna between Rapid Vienna and Red Bull Salzburg.
So champions and runner-ups of the last season and the 2 big favourites for the 2008/09 Austrian title are going to face eachothers in a full stadium that is already sold out (17.500).
The mood of the two teams is really different at the moment and everything seems in Red Bulls' side right now but the sensational 7-0 away win at Salzburg is a souvenir that Rapid would like to prove again in front of their fans.

Bundesliga didn't start very well for the defending champions because in the first match played at Graz on Tuesday evening they were not only defeated 3-1 by Sturm Graz but outplayed by the Styrians during the 90 minutes.
The nice Andreas Dober's shot out of the box that gave Rapid the illusion of a come back in the beginning of the second half is one of the few good things to remember from the opening match of this season.
A lot of mistakes in the midfield and in the defence and a couple of funny saves by Georg Koch were the symbol of the bad day and maybe bad shape of the champions at Graz.
The missings in the midfield of Marcel Ketelaer and Veli Kavlak, the ones called to substitute Ümit Korkmaz this year in the left midfield, and the ones of the young midfielders Marcel Toth, Coskun Kayhan and Georg Harding, and of the forward René Gartler, had pushed coach Peter Pacult to field a cautios 4-5-1 that eventually proved to be a big mistake. Pacult changed his mind and in the second half, that was surely the best part of the game for Rapid, he came back to the traditional 4-4-2 calling off the lonely striker Erwin Hoffer and fielding the newcomer Croat Nikica Jelavic and Stefan Maierhofer.
That Rapid probably will be the one we'll see tonight with Stefan Kulovits in the defensive midfield together with Finn Markus Heikkinen and captain Steffen Hofmann and Branko Boskovic on the wings. So youngster Boris Prokopic who played in the starting lineup against Sturm as left midfielder should start from the bench this time.
Up front Stefan Maierhofer and Erwin Hoffer should play from the first minute while the defensive lineup will stay the same with Koch between the posts, Dober on the right, Patocka and Eder as center backs and Katzer on the left.
Of course the situation about the missings is still the same and Pacult won't be able to field his regular goalkeeper Helge Payer, who will be unavailable for a lot of months, left midfielders Marcel Ketelaer and Veli Kavlak, forward René Gartler and the young midfielders Marcel Toth, Coskun Kayhan and Georg Harding.

In the Mozart's city the mood is really different at the moment. Mr. Mateschitz (Mr. Red Bull) was hugely disappointed last season and went to the summer transfer market with the only idea to buy everyone could help his team to win the title and make a good run in Uefa Cup.
Red Bulls showed again his huge budget and a lot of very good and experienced players came to Salzburg together with 60 y.o. Dutch coach Co Adriaanse (ex Az, Ajax and Porto).
So Red Bulls were already awarded as the first favourite of this season but what happened in the first round surely erased all the remaining doubts about the team.
Nonetheless the 9 missings in the first match against Mattersburg, Red Bull Salzburg not only won 6-0 but showed a very nice and entertainement way to play football.
A lot of players need a mention but the newcomer Cameroon's midfielder Somen Tchoyi (best player in Norway 2 years ago) and Austrian forward Marc Janko deserve the titles.
The first one is a player that can make the difference in Austria. Fast, technic, and with good physic he scored a nice goal (the first one) by header but was involved in almost all the best Red Bulls' actions.
Janko had probably started this season with many doubts because besides captain Alexander Zickler, the young rising star from Cameroon, Louis Clement Ngwat-Mahop, and the experienced Netherlands Antilles captain Robin Nelisse, both in goal vs. Mattersburg, were ready to steal him a place in the starting offensive lineup.
By the way Janko proved how good he is with 3 goals (the last one simply amazing) and has already got the nick name Salzburger Gerd Müller.
If the Bullen offense showed no problem in their first match with the come back of Swiss National Team player Johan Vonlanthen surely they won't lack someone up front.
So Vonlanthen is ready to come back and the 31 y.o. Slovakian Vladimir Janocko should be the one called out from the 18 players that will be at Hütteldorf tonight.
The other 8 missings are confirmed and they are: 31 y.o. Czech midfielder Patrik Jezek, 24 y.o. Tunisian midfielder Majdi Traoui, 32 y.o. Dutch defender Barry Opdam, 22 y.o. Serbian forward Djordje Rakic, 21 y.o. Croat left back Manuel Pamic, 31 y.o. Japanese center back Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, 28 y.o. Serbian center back Milan Dudic, and 27 y.o. Czech midfielder Karel Pitak, the first 4 are all injured and the others didn't get a call by coach Adriaanse.
So everything looks ready to erase that 0-7 home loss and take the Bullen revenge at Vienna.
